Mirror Mirror

I know I've said this before, but seriously: Had I not carried this child in my womb for nine and a half months, I would not believe that 50% of her genetics were derived from me. I mean, just look at us.

We look nothing alike. I'm OK with that. I didn't plan on having a clone. But, a part of me wonders if the fact that she looks nothing like me, means that instead, she will act just like me. That, I fear will be a problem.

Why?

I'm stubborn, argumentative, super competitive, anal retentive when it comes to my day planner (I believe spontaneity only exists in chick flicks) and I struggle with forgiveness. When someone crosses me, I hold a grudge for pretty much forever. If you would like examples, I have plenty and some of them go all the way back to fourth grade.

These are qualities that I would like to keep to myself, but I wonder by virtue of genetic code, Lola will end up with them too. And then we will clash. Until the end of time. I can just hear the doors slamming now.

Josh informed me a few days ago that he was going to be the "good cop" and I was going to be the "bad cop." He has already begun practicing this parenting approach by always holding her while she naps (I put her in her crib) and handing her off to me when it's time for her to go in her car seat (she throws riots that would put LA to shame when it's time to get in the car).

At a mere four months, she has already begun to blame me for all that is wrong in her life. When she is upset, "Mamamama!" she is what she cries. I am sure that she has no idea that she is saying "Mama" and this combination of consonants and vowels that leaves her lips is just a random compliation, but still, that is what she says.

In all honesty, I don't think Josh's good cop / bad cop technique will actually play out as he plans (as his distain for spoiled brats is as strong as mine), and I know that I have plenty of respectable personality qualities that Lola may inherit, but for right now I will relish in this: her first word is Mama.

Take that, good cop.

  1. It's going to be really interesting to see what comes out of her! :) I think she does look a bit like you, though!

  2. She's got that impish look in her eyes...although I'm not sure if that's looks or personality. You might really have a point with this one.
