Baseball Season is Here

and, really, I couldn't care less.

(Sorry, Liz.)

Although, I will say, I think Lola is a Padres fan. Or, at least, she's a fan of the hat.

Go Pads.

Living Life on the Edge

When Josh watched this video, he instantly sprouted 6 new gray hairs.

And you all thought I would be the neurotic one. :)

Hippity Hop

With all of our traveling and minds elsewhere, it really wasn't until Saturday night that I gave Easter some serious thought. With no menu in mind, no basket of goodies for Lola, and no real plans for the day, I decided that I would just wing it.

Wing it
.

A phrase for the carefree and relaxed. Frequently used by the same group of people who casually say, "no worries," when you both reach for the last banana at the grocery store. Go ahead, they say, it's OK. They'll feed their kid an orange, or an apple, or a pear, they'll roll with it.

At that moment, when I decided to wing it, I should have stopped myself. I should have began a list. What would have been on that list? I don't know, but that's the sort of person I am. A LIST PERSON. I need lists, just like I need plans, just like I need, you know, to start HOLIDAY TRADITIONS WITH MY KID SO SHE DOESN'T GROW UP NOT KNOWING WHAT EASTER IS.

But did I start a list? No. Instead, I went to bed and when I woke up, I felt a bit out of sorts.

Being that this was Easter, I asked myself, What Would Martha Do?

And that's when I said, "That bitch would improvise." (Spoken internally of course, so my little sponge wouldn't hear me.)

And so the traditions began:

First, Lola and I made bunny pancakes from peanut butter banana batter. The first pancake ended up resembling a character from Watchman. (Note to self: if you are going to add chocolate chips to the batter, just add them, don't use them for eyes, mouth, etc.)

The subsequent pancakes were more successful.

Then, I opted to dress Lola in jeans and t-shirt rather than a spring dress. Unfortunately, we experienced rain clouds and gloomy skies all day long and, on top of it, Lola has bronchitis and was feeling rotten. I felt that her spring chick tee was a good substitute.

I attempted to get a photo of her with Mr. Bun Bun, the stuffed bunny that my parents sent her for last Easter.

She's grown quite a bit since last year.

This year, she received a flamingo, who we promptly named Antonio or Tony (for short). I picked the name, as I decided that I would like to use all the baby names that family members suggested for Lola, for her stuffed animals.

There you have it dad. Please meet, Tony the Flamingo.

Later, we engage in some Easter day crafting and made bunny ears for Archie. He refused to wear them. I was able to convince Lola to wear them for a few minutes, but unable to convince her to allow me to take a decent photograph.

Gizmo wore them for a few seconds as well.

And even Josh humored me.

After dinner (scalloped potatoes, roasted asparagus, and crostini topped with kale, white bean, and prosciutto), we dyed eggs and engaged in an indoor hunt.

All in all, I believe the day was a success. Maybe not for Martha, but for me.

Reese and Elliott

I'm sorry for the long break in between posts.

We spent the last week of March traveling down to Southern California to spend time with family and friends. We drove down to Southern California and if you how far north we live and have ever spent more than 20 minutes in the car with a baby/small child/monster, you shouldn't be surprised to hear that we are still recovering from the drive itself.

Our primary reason for traveling down south was to attend a baby shower for Josh's baby sister, Rachel. I guess I should revise that sentence to say, Josh's younger sister, as she is certainly no longer a baby.

Pregnant with twins, Rachel was due June 10, but the universe seemed to have a different plan. Reese and Elliott joined our family on March 16. Born at 27.5 weeks gestation, their arrival was bittersweet.

I am overjoyed that they are alive. They are breathing. They are able to eat with assistance. They are receiving very good medical care.

But they are struggling. Specifically, my sweet sweet nephew Reese is struggling. I have no actual details to share, as I know of none. All I have been told is, Reese is not doing well.

Reese needs to be well. Reese and Elliott both need to be well.

And Rachel. She needs to be well too. I can't form the words to describe how she must feel as I have never faced such circumstances myself.

Knowing that my family is going through something of this magnitude, I have felt that blogging about the trivial events in my life is insensitive. The fact that I have mentally debated now for four straight days as to whether I want to spend $10 and put together an Easter basket for Lola even though she will have no idea what it is, seems ridiculous to me. At the same time, I know that most of my family members read my blog and so maybe trivial ridiculousness would help distract us all from the very serious reality we are currently experiencing.

I don't know. I just want everyone to be OK.

Walking and Talking

Yes, another video. :)

Cirque de Bebe

Lola loves electronics. Any sort of remote control, camera, computer, phone, wireless or wired, she loves them all and doesn't discriminate. Her favorite kind of electronics? The ones that we don't allow her to play with. This category includes the video camera. So now, with her new found mobility, filming her takes on a new level of ninja-like qualities.

Anyway, with all that said, I caught about 4 seconds of her newest physical feat.

Her jumper is now serving a new purpose.

Hair

Over the weekend, Lola reached the 13 month mark. She is talking more, walking more, eating more...it seems like she is developing new tricks each and every day. While I need to take some time and record all of these new events, I don't feel like doing that tonight.

So, instead, I give you this photo. Lola, with hair, yes hair long enough that it requires a clip. Eating and enjoying eggs, much to Josh's dismay. Finally, something Lola and I have in common. :)
